Karakalpakstan is the country's most underestimated region for funeral complexity. Services here are the cheapest in Uzbekistan, but the distances between Nukus, Muynak, Khodjeyli, Chimbay and Kungrad are so great that transport often becomes the largest line item — larger than the entire burial.
The overall level. Services in Nukus run 35–45% below Tashkent. Yet an inter-district body transfer can cost as much as three grave diggings. That is why a «cheap region» does not always mean a cheap estimate in practice.
The official part matches the rest of the country. Death registration fee — about 15,300 UZS. A plot is free by law. Cemetery tariffs are approved by the Council of Ministers of Karakalpakstan and district mayors. The state benefit is 4 × the pension base — about 2,016,000 UZS from 1 July 2026.
Real figures. Kafan — 100,000–350,000 UZS. Grave digging — 120,000–300,000. Transport within Nukus — 150,000–400,000. Burial — 0.6–1.4 million UZS. The benefit covers it with room to spare.
Transport is the region's defining feature. Moving a body from Nukus to Muynak, Kungrad or a remote village runs 800,000–2,500,000 UZS depending on distance and road condition. If the death occurred in Tashkent and the burial is in Karakalpakstan, intercity transport costs 3–7 million UZS, and air transport more, with separate paperwork. This is the case where the choice of burial place has direct financial consequences, best discussed in the first hours.
The wake. Karakalpak commemoration differs from the Fergana pattern: the circle is usually narrower and the formats more restrained. Plov or a traditional dastarkhan by the mahalla for 80–150 people — 1.5–4 million UZS. Restaurant format in Nukus starts at 70,000–110,000 per head.
The 2026 bottom line. Modest format in Nukus: 1.8–3 million UZS. With a long transfer to a district: 4–8 million. Traditional with a wide dastarkhan: 5–9 million. Monument separate: simple slab from 600,000; engraved granite 1.8–6 million.
Grave care here is its own story. Very many families have left Karakalpakstan — for Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey. Graves in remote districts sit unattended for decades, and finding them is harder than in any other region: addressing is approximate, landmarks change, old records are incomplete.
