Khorezm has the most persistent ritual tradition and, after Karakalpakstan, the most remote logistics. Urgench and Khiva sit 1,000 kilometres from Tashkent, and that distance sets both transport prices and the lead time for any cemetery work.
The overall level. Services in Urgench run 30–40% below Tashkent. The mahalla is very strong here: ghusl, grave digging, preparation and dishes almost always come through the community. Commercial funeral bureaus mostly occupy the transport and goods niche.
The official part. Death registration fee — about 15,300 UZS. A plot is free by law. Cemetery tariffs are approved by the regional mayor. The state benefit is 4 × the pension base — about 2,016,000 UZS from 1 July 2026 — processed at Khalq Bank or my.gov.uz.
Real figures. Kafan — 110,000–350,000 UZS. Grave digging — 130,000–320,000. Transport within Urgench — 180,000–450,000. Urgench to Khiva or a district — 300,000–900,000. A Muslim burial — 0.7–1.5 million UZS.
The distance to Tashkent is the region's key number. If the death occurred in the capital and the burial is in Khorezm, road transport runs 4–8 million UZS; by air it is more, with separate paperwork. This is the most common reason Khorezm families decide the burial place quickly, often in favour of the capital when the person had long lived there.
The wake. The Khorezm dastarkhan is wide: 120–250 people is a normal circle. Self-organised — 2.5–5 million UZS. A serviced toykhana — from 80,000–120,000 per head, so 10–20 million for a large circle.
The 2026 bottom line. Modest format in Urgench: 1.8–3 million UZS. Traditional with a wide dastarkhan: 5–10 million. With body delivery from Tashkent: add 4–8 million. Monument separate: simple slab from 650,000; engraved granite 1.8–6.5 million.
Khiva and the heritage zone. Some old cemeteries in Khiva adjoin protected heritage sites, and any work there — monument installation, fence replacement, landscaping — requires approval and is sometimes simply not permitted. We always check the plot's status before a family orders the stone, not after.
For families abroad. The Khorezm diaspora is notable in Russia, Turkey and Kazakhstan.
