When choosing a monument for a relative's grave in Uzbekistan, the first fork is material. Granite, marble and travertine each have distinct properties in the local climate (sharp temperature swings, dust, seasonal precipitation). This pillar is the practical breakdown for a deciding family.
Granite. Igneous, very hard (7 Mohs). The most popular base for Uzbek monuments — about 85% of modern installations. Pros: weathering-resistant (100+ years without significant change), takes polish to mirror finish, holds laser engraving in detail. Cons: heavy and expensive to ship.
Granite colours. Absolute Black (India — premium), Black Galaxy (with golden flecks), Tan Brown, Kashmir White (with dark spots), Steel Grey, Vizag Blue. The most popular is Absolute Black; the most expensive is Black Galaxy. Dedicated article: Indian Granite Absolute Black and other types.
Marble. Metamorphic, softer than granite (3–4 Mohs). Aesthetically gives a soft, noble look; popular for Jewish and Catholic matzevahs. Cons: poor weathering — in 30–50 years in Uzbek climate noticeably loses polish, needs regular care. Works if family is committed to extended maintenance or for graves protected by trees.
Travertine. Sedimentary, softer still. Rarely used in Uzbekistan due to poor durability. Only fitting for protected sites (inside a mausoleum, under a roof).
Uzbek climate. Temperature swings from -15°C winters to +40°C summers, dusty springs (khamsin), intense summer UV, infrequent but heavy rains. Granite — ideal. Marble — works with regular care (wash 2–4×/year, repolish every 5–7 years). Travertine — not recommended.
Price. Base stela (100×60×8 cm) + base: Absolute Black $1500–2500; Black Galaxy $2000–3500; Tan Brown $1200–2000; Steel Grey $1000–1800; white marble $1300–2200; grey marble $1100–1900; travertine $900–1500. Installation $300–600 on top.
Lead times. Granite 3–5 weeks from order to ready (with laser engraving). Marble 4–6 weeks. Travertine 5–7 weeks (less common in stock).
Our recommendations. Most cases — Absolute Black or Black Galaxy. Jewish families with traditional preference for light matzevahs — white marble. Orthodox with budget — Steel Grey or Tan Brown. Premium — memorial complex in heavy granite (dedicated article).
