India is the world's largest exporter of granite for headstones; about 70% of all modern premium monuments in Uzbekistan are made from Indian granites. Each variety has its own character. This article is the practical guide.
1. Absolute Black. Most popular, classic «black granite». Deep uniform black, fine-grained, mirror polish. Ideal for laser-engraved portraits. From Karnataka. $1500–2500 standard stela.
2. Black Galaxy. Black with scattered golden flecks (bronzite). More elegant; popular for premium families. From Andhra Pradesh. $2000–3500.
3. Tan Brown. Warm brown with dark flecks. Alternative to black for families who want something distinct. Pairs well with golden bronze letters. $1200–2000.
4. Kashmir White. Creamy white with small dark spots (biotite). Favourite for Jewish matzevahs — gives a light, non-distracting background where Hebrew engraving reads well. $1300–2200.
5. Steel Grey. Cool grey-blue, calm neutral. Good for budget or non-prominent options. $1000–1800.
6. Vizag Blue. Dark blue-grey, rare. Expensive, used less. $1800–2800.
7. Viscount White. White with grey veining — almost marble-like in appearance, but with granite durability. Good alternative for families wanting the marble look without weathering. $1500–2400.
Picking. No preference — Absolute Black. Premium — Black Galaxy. Tradition-light (Jewish, some Catholic) — Kashmir White or Viscount White. Budget — Steel Grey or Tan Brown.
