A memorial meal is an old tradition of gathering relatives on key memorial dates: days 3, 7, 40 and the anniversary. Format, menu and guest count depend on family, region and tradition.
Muslim families often serve plov, shurpa, lepyoshka, dried fruit and sweets; Quran suras are read. Orthodox and secular families serve kutya, blini, fish, lenten dishes, with little or no alcohol — at the family's discretion.
Organization: usually 1–3 days before the date you order plov or a set menu at a chaikhana/restaurant, agree on guest count, time and service. Some families prefer a home table — then helpers for cooking and serving are needed.
What matters: allergies, fasting days, individual guests' traditions. Names of the departed and a brief family word — short, without theatre.
Grave doesn't host the meal but we can suggest trusted chaikhanas and handle the cemetery part the same day. In short: 3/7/40/365 days, menu by family tradition, prepare 1–3 days ahead.
